Cosplay 101!

Welcome to cosplay 101!

This past year I've been making an effort with one of my favourite hobbies: cosplay! I've spent the past 4 months developing my passion and it's paid off! I've built quite a following on TikTok and recently we hit 10k followers! Thank you all for the love

I've started a series on the platform where I give some tips on products you can use for cosplays. I decided it would be easier if I made a blog post people can refer back to so they can find the link to the products I mention since comments can't get pinned on TikTok

So for all my COSPLAY 101 videos, this is the post to refer back to and you'll find links to all the products I recommend!

(some of these links are amazon affiliate links which means I may make a small commission off them but they're all products I've been using before I even had a platform, trust me they're good!)

*affiliate links will redirect you to the Amazon page, you might get a google notice before the page loads*

red face paint

blue face paint

yellow face paint

white face paint

black face paint

These paints are water activated! They set very well and don't transfer once dry (they will only transfer if they're still damp). Apply with a synthetic flat brush, I like the flat foundation brush from real techniques but I don't think it's in production anymore. I've left some recommendations above as well.

TIP! Face paints are good for makeup looks at home, not for long term wear. For cosplays/costumes you plan on wearing for a long time, I recommend grease paint or cream pigments. Sweat and rain will easily ruin your look. Remember these are WATER activated, even when set they reactivate when wet.

Application tips:

  • A spray bottle with water / a cup of water
  • Synthetic flat brush

1) spray the face paint or use a wet brush to activate the product

2) don't use too much water, you want a thin paste-like consistency

3) apply in broad strokes and in sections, the paint dries fast!

4) don't apply too many layers or the paint will crack

Keep an eye out for a video tutorial soon! 😉

Grease paint is the best way to get an opaque white base, especially on darker skin! It's basically impossible to get a white base with face paint, seriously, I've tried.

Grease paint can be tricky to work with but with practice, it becomes easier. Many companies make a "clown white" product, Ben Nye and Krylon are some more expensive but high-quality alternatives. Some grease paints come in stick formulas that are cleaner to apply, tub formulas require a spatula or stick to scoop out the product (you can use your hands but it will get VERY messy).

TIP! Apply a layer of white water activated face paint on before the grease paint, this doesn't have to be perfect but it will help you have a more even base.

TIP! Use a matte primer, especially if you have oily skin. This product is very greasy so you'll want some oil protection and a barrier to stop your skin from clogging. I'll leave some primer recommendations below.

HOW TO APPLY:

- Apply a small amount at a time, the product is VERY thick and spreads out.

- Take a dense brush (or dry sponge) and spread out the product in sections with a tapping motion (don't swipe it on).

- Grease paint HAS to be set or you'll be a mess and everything will smudge! Take a white powder on a sponge and set every crevice of your face (even if you have dry skin like me!)

If you want a pale look that isn't stark white, you can use a white foundation, this works great on fair skin. On dark skin, use a white concealer mixed with a little of your usual concealer for a "pale look" without looking too ashy.

On fair skin set with a white setting powder, on darker skin, mix a white setting powder with your usual for the "pale look" (examples below). I'll leave some recommendations for white foundation base products alongside as well.
